Halloween is this weekend... in no time we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving (and eating a TON :) ) and then Xmas and that will be it for 2009!

Good ol' Fall... it's been chilly and cold... and gray and rainy.. and windy and eh.... I miss those summer days when we could go out and ride or run for a while. The flip side of this season is the change of colors, there are some nice days where you can go for a run, enjoy the view and just have a great run... no matter what speed, pace or anything, simply enjoy the run and your surroundings.

It's been a great season, lots of races and of course the big one for me: Ironman Louisville in August. In less than two weeks I'm going to Las Vegas to do my last 2009 tri: Silverman (half iron distance). I don't feel too great about it since after Louisville I took a well deserved -but way too long- break... This is a very hard tri and I'll do my best, I know my time won't be a fantastic time but I'm still doing it. It'll be interesting to say the least. I'm excited about going to Vegas for the first time.

Been thinking about next year and what races I'd like to do... got a few in mind but nothing for sure yet. I'll post my race schedule for 2010 soon... I will say though, there will be another Ironman race next year.

After Silverman I am planning on taking another break, this one will be short... probably hit the gym and start focusing in core workouts. Knowing myself I'll find some running races in the area so I can 1- get my butt out in the cold weather, 2- work in my running form/speed and 3- try to stay motivated.

I also need to start posting more often... I'm such a slacker!

Adios for now!Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-39280128901955945192009-09-04T14:13:00.002-05:002009-09-04T16:47:43.787-05:00Patricio Cordero... you are an IRONMAN!!!So I did it! I did my first full IROMAN race. Ironman Louisville on Sunday August 30, 2009.

It's hard to explain what exactly I feel about it. What a HUGE accomplishment... I am so proud of myself, happy, excited... I could go on and on.... and sorry, but after this I can brag as much as I want! :)

I haven't been able to write here... it's been way too long.... It's just hard to find the time, with familia, work, training, etc..... it's just craziness. (not that a lot people read this but anyway...)

Ironman Lou was a great race. I just can't believe the weather, it helped SO much! Last year when I registered for it, everybody said "be ready for a VERY HOT race". In fact Triathelte magazine, in their Ironman races review, stated it is the hottest IM event in the US (with out counting Kona). Little did we know race day's weather was in the 60/70s, very very low humidity and some sun.... it was just perfect!

We arrived in Lou on Friday afternoon and went straight to athlete check-in. Got my race bibs, chip, swim cap and special need bags. I immediately noticed how amazing the volunteers were... extremely nice people. Sat morning went to the swim practice, saw a few St. Louis triathletes there as well. I did a 20min swim. The water felt great. After that met my friend Paul who was also doing IM Lou and we rode about 12 miles. Went back to hotel, ate and took Diabla to bike check-in.

The atmosphere in the city was powerful... I could feel this energy which I assume was from all the athletes (close to 3,000) racing on Sunday. Everywhere you'd look you'd see people in bikes, people running, car with bike racks..... It was definitely Ironman time. Plus all the preparation for the race, cops, athlete's families and friends.

Dinner was pasta of course and then bed. Unfortunately the pasta didn't make me feel too good, that and nervousness were not a good mix. Woke up a couple of times and my stomach was hurting. Took some Peptobismol and that probably helped.

Race day I woke up at 4:15am... went to the bathroom.... it was... eh.... don't wanna go into details. : P But I thought it's all part of it. Had 2 powerbars and gatorade for breakfast then wifey and girlies took me to TA (transition area) where I dropped some of my stuff. Checked on Diabla, got her ready and walked .75mile to the swim start. Thank God I saw some of my STL friends, walking and chatting with them helped me to get a bit distracted.

We got there and got on line. I peed one time and at 7AM the race started. It was still dark. I jumped in the water at around 7:15ish... of course, typical me, had to pee again so before I started swimming I peed really quick. And off I went 2.4 miles swim. The swim was uneventful, water felt great again and I just took my time, stretching, bilateral breathing, all good. Swim time: 1hr 17min.

Got out of the water and jogged towards TA. A volunteer handed me my bag with my bike stuff and I headed to the tent. Another volunteer came and asked me if I needed anything, grabbed my bag, got my stuff out and passed me whatever I needed. Put my helmet, bike shoes and bib on, swim cap and goggles in the bag and left. The volunteer took the bag with him. Course I had to stop to pee again. Grabbed Diabla and got out of TA to start my 112mile bike ride.

My T1 time was loooooong.... I didn't care. Wanted to take my time, make sure I had all and ready. T1 time: 6min 05sec

The bike ride was fine.... the course was hillier than I expected. At mile 30ish I needed to pee again, I waited for a while and tried to pee in the bike (which I never done before) but man, I just couldn't... tried and tried.... not possible. Next aid station was where I peed. Didn't want to stop but I had to. Got back in the bike and kept going. Nutrition worked just as planned. Every 20min I had a drink or two of Perpetuem and the next 20min gel. I also did some Endurolytes. At mile 60ish I needed to pee again.... this time I was determined to pee in the bike.... and this time I was successful!! it was interesting to say the least.... grabbed some of my water and washed it off. At mile 80... ouch... I was hurting... knees, back and ass.... I wanted to be done! I put on an easy gear and spinned until I got back to TA. It started a huge mental thing. I kept talking to myself... it was like the little Patricio Devil talking to the Patricio Angel on my shoulders:

P Devil: Dude, you're done! how the hell are you gonna run a marathon after this???
P Angel: STFU!!! you are doing great! you trained for this, you'll be just fine!
P Devil: Rrrright.... if your legs hurt like this right now, when you start the run they will be completely trashed.
P Angel: No way! You use different muscles, no worries, you got this mother!

(then the P Angel proceeded to beat the !*@&#^ out of the P Devil and that was it)

JUAAAAAAAAA

Anyway.... got to TA, a volunteer grabbed Diabla and I jogged to the tent. Another nice volunteer helped me again. Took helmet and shoes off, grabbed socks, my Newton racers and visor and off I went again.... no wait... I peed and then I was gone.

T2 time once again was L O N G, sat there, got ready, took my time and left. Official time: 8min 17sec.

And just like that I started the 26.2mile run. The run was ok, started fine, saw my familia right after I left from TA. My first 3+ miles were 8:30ish min/mile... a bit faster than I should have gone, oh well.... it was all the excitement and all. But from then on it went to 9, 9:30, 10, 10:30.... final avg pace for the marathon was 10:47min/mile. I'm good with it. I walked in several water stations and this time I had to stop to go to the bathroom.... and no, it was not to pee... had to number 2. About 3 min later I was running my last 4.2 miles. At that point I was in pain. Feet hurt, knees hurt, quads hurt, back hurt, neck hurt.... But was so close..... so kept going. I got closer and closer to the finish line and started hearing the crowds, the music, the cowbells, all the noise.... I have no idea where I got the strength but I sprinted at the end (at least it felt like I did). Run time: 4hrs 42min

I crossed the finish line and heard Mike Reilly going: Patricio Cordero from O'Fallon, MO.. YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!! I did it! I freaking did it!!!!!!!!!!

Final Ironman(and official) time: 12hrs 30min 33sec

What an amazing and unique feeling. Got my medal, got the pic taken and found my family. Hugged them and celebrated with them.

This has been one of the coolest things I have ever done. Would I do it again? absolutely! hopefully next year! : )

I have been resting and eating like crap this past week... Enough for now... It's time to get ready for REDMAN in Oklahoma City in 2 more weeks.

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-12200135332186839542009-06-10T13:55:00.005-05:002009-06-10T14:40:20.094-05:00UpdatesI haven't been posted in days!!! I keep telling myself I need to but never get to it....

Anyway.... some quick updates:

- May 3 Tri Zou (sprint) Triathlon... Columbia, MO. I PR'ed by around 3 min. Finished in 1hr 13min.

- May 17 Memphis in May (Olympic) Triathlon.... I had a really good race. It was windy so the swim was a bit choppy and the bike wasn't too pleasant. I still managed to PR for Oly distance. Total time: 2hrs 24min. I would suggest this race to anyone, very well organized, a lot of fun, great venue, good courses and fantastic crowd and volunteer support.

- June 6 Quartermax/Ultramax Triathlon... Innsbrook, MO. This is, hands down the hardest triathlon I have ever done... mind you I haven't done a ton of tris but in the last 3 years I have participated in a few, including 2 HIMs. I did it last year and even though last year it was in August, (pretty darn hot and humid), I still PR'ed by 5min . My total time: 1hr 23min This truly is a tough tri since both the bike and run are quite hilly.

Not this weekend but the next one, I will be doing my third HIM race. This is not an Ironman branded tri but it's the HIM distance. The race is called Cutting Edge Half Classic Triathlon and it's in Effingham, IL. I am excited about it and wondering what my time will be.

I just got some new wheels. Early Father's Day present.... yup.... got a wheel set, bless my girlies and wifey : )
The wheels are the Easton EA90 SLX, they are pretty light (1398 grams) and feel really nice and smooth. Love them! Couldn't get them on time for the Innsbrook tri but I have them now and ready to roll.

Here's a pic of Diabla and her new wheels... doesn't she look hot? :)

80 days until Ironman Louisville!!!Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-59490388652645606142009-04-30T20:38:00.004-05:002009-04-30T20:56:36.799-05:00GO! STL half marathon and May tris...On April 19 I ran the GO! Saint Louis Half Marathon for the third year in a row. I had a really good race. My chip time was 1hr 34min 24sec, my best half mara so far. Felt great from the beginning all the way until the end.

On the other hand I am pretty excited about Tri season, it's finally here. I am heading to Columbia, MO for my first tri of 2009. The name: Tri Zou Sprint Tri. I did it last year and my time was 1hr 16min 52sec. I wonder what's gonna be my time this year. Should be fun and hopefully we'll have decent weather... accuweather.com says mostly cloudy with a high of 60. Might be a little chilly early in the morning but as long as it doesn't rain I'll be happy.

On May 17 I'm doing Memphis in May, I heard great things about this oly tri and a bunch of peeps from the STL Tri Club are going, we'll have a nice group there.

There are other 2 tris happening in May in my area I am thinking about but not sure yet.... the Gateway Triathlon Oly in Carlyle, IL on May 24 and the Escape to the Bluffs Triathlon Sprint in Elsah, IL on May 30. Is that too much? or are they good practice?

Training is going better than ever. Feel great and strong and definitely seeing good results (Thanks Sammy!! :) )

Be safe out there and enjoy Spring time!

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-37796331722259616462009-04-11T20:52:00.004-05:002009-04-11T22:01:09.601-05:00Sarah Haskins and me... On Sunday March 22nd I was able to meet Olympic Triathlete Sarah Haskins who was in St. Louis (her hometown). Sarah was invited to the YMCA where she used to swim to talk about what it takes to become an Olympic athlete from nutrition to training and dedication. It was really nice to meet her and talk to her for a bit. She's a very cool girl, smart and of course a fantastic triathlete.

By the way...I can't believe how bad I've been at updating my blog, I know I suck... Don't even have a reason... call it laziness, call it busy times, maybe a little bit of both?

Anyway, training for IM Louisville has been great. Haven't had any injuries and I can totally feel my bike has improved! Hard work is definitely paying off. It's so rewarding to see and feel those changes, those differences... I can really tell the difference of my bike now versus last year. Bad thing has been the weather but I have still managed to get out and ride. Last weekend I rode 36miles on Sat and 46 on Sun. Today I did 40 on a sunny but cold morning, it was in the high 30s when a couple of friends and I started.

Swimming has been also been great, all good there and nothing much to report. I'm in the 2,000+ meter per work out right now and feel pretty good. Finally the runs. My runs have improved as well. Back in March for the St. Patrick's Parade 5mile Race in downtown St. Louis I managed to PR with a time of 33min 58sec which put me in 15th place out of 168 in my age group (35-39). Not bad at all since I've been doing lots of endurance training and not so much speed work.

The GO! St. Louis half marathon is a week from tomorrow, should be interesting. I'm looking forward to it. The following weekend some local triathletes who are also doing IM Lou are going to Louisville for an IM training camp. On Saturday some of us will be running the Kentucky Derby Festival Half-Marathon in the morning and then we are swimming in the afternoon; Sunday we are riding half or the full IM bike course. I think it'll be a great chance to get familiar with the course and kinda of know what to expect on race day.

I am pretty excited about my first triathlon of the season which is less than a month away. It's the Tri Zou (formerly known as Race for Sight) in Columbia, MO. It's a sprint one, I did it last year and it's a nice way to start the season (I hear Simon Lessing is doing this race this year). Then later in May I'll be going to Memphis for the popular: Memphis in May oly triathlon.

In preparation for IM Lou I also registered for a half ironman distance race, the Cutting Edge Half Classic in Effignham, Illinois... it's on June 21st.

That's my little update for now... HAPPY EASTER!

PC
Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-84040097965450177762009-03-12T19:01:00.003-05:002009-03-12T20:38:36.775-05:00Too much chlorine! OMG chlorine is SO nasty, especially when there is a ton of it... they are putting WAY too much of in the pool where I swim. I have taken 2 showers, one at the gym and one at home and I still smell it, fell it.. TASTE it!!! This is the second time that I actually taste it. It felt weird when I was in the pool, in between work outs, my mouth and especially teeth felt dry..... they are still a bit dry and even my throat feels a bit.. sore, and not the "cough - cough" type sore, it's more like the I went to a concert last night and sang all the songs for 3 hours sore.

I am definitely talking to someone at the gym about it, this can't be good for me... or anyone who swims there. I mean for real, it's a pretty strong chemical and in exaggerated amounts... not good! Result: extra dry skin, burning eyes, sore throat, dry teeth and mouth and of course the well known obnoxious chlorine smell which kind of becomes your 2 day cologne/perfume.

One thing's for sure.... highly chlorinated pools suck!

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-12366782545055121262009-03-03T15:03:00.004-06:002009-03-03T16:07:32.171-06:00Castlewood Park 10m Trail Race This past Sat. I did my second trail race ever. My first one was about a couple of years ago when I did one of the X-Terra series, that race was a 5k I think.

The one I did on Sat 2/28 was at Castlewood Park in Ballwin, MO. it was put together by Big River Running Company.
(nice face huh? that's my: "I'm gonna sprint!" face) ===>

The race started at 10am, it was a cold morning (in the low 30s but it definitely felt colder) but I was fine as soon as we started. The course was harder than I thought it would be. Of course running on a trail is completely different than road running... you have to be totally aware about where you step because there are roots and rocks hiding underneath the leafs. This trail is used a lot by mountain bikers and you could tell, there were a lot of MB tracks on the ground, and that was a pin because it was very uneven and easy to twist your ankle, which i did a few times. Each time I did I would drop myself with it and that seemed to work, I never had to stop because it wasn't too bad. Lots of hills, up hills.. down hills.... and at the end.. a nice little river to cross.... it was actually kind of fun to go through it. I didn't care to run the last .3 or so with soaked shoes and socks. If it would have been anything longer than a mile I probably wouldn't have done it.

By mile 4ish I fell.... I missed a root and went down, luckily I fell on a bunch of leafs... I pretty much bounced back up and kept running. It could have been a lot worse because there were parts where we ran on gravel, rocky areas and steep hills. At mile 5 the S. Louis Tri Club (which I belong to) had a water station.... felt nice to have some agua, Gatorade and a GU (I forgot to bring my own gel) and of course seeing some of the tri club peeps, cheering and all.

Finished at 1hr 18min. Not bad for a trail race. When I went to the organizers' website to check official results they had a disclaimer stating: "For safety reasons we made a few changes to the course over the last month. These changes gave us an official race distance of 9.2 miles" Doesn't have any additional info on it....

Now the crazy thing about this whole story is... at the finish line they had NO WATER!!!!....... (crickets)

WTF... what race doesn't have water at the end???? not even a 1 mile race! I mean, we just ran 10 miles - or 9.2 - They only had those 180 energy drinks. I couldn't believe it! Everybody was asking each other, where's the water?? do you know where is the water? water??? nada.... no water! I mean, c'mon! picture this: you go, run a 10 mile trail race, finish and someone hands you a Red Bull.... yeah... pretty wild eh? Disappointing. At least the race t-shirt is cool :)

PPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-78842492573319926412009-02-20T20:41:00.002-06:002009-02-20T20:54:56.643-06:00I hate you Old Man Winter!

I am SO done with the winter.... can't ride outdoors, it's hard and COLD (and sometimes dangerous) to run out there and most of all I keep getting sick... dammit!!!

I am fighting this nasty cold right now which has forced me to stop training for 4 days in a row. Plus my family has been pretty sick too. So if one doesn't get it, the other one will and the one who didn't get it initially might get it because the other one has it!! (I just read that again and I was like.. wtf!) Anyway, you get the point.

Thing is too, St. Louis weather can be very unpredictable.. one day is in the 70s and the very next day it'll drop 40 degrees and it's in the 30s! So yeah, no wonder why people get sick. Wherever you go, grocery store, work, any store in general you hear -or see- people coughing the freaking lungs off. Oh, and we're getting some snow tonight... great!

Ok, I guess I bitched enough... but unfortunately I don't have much else to say at this point. At least it's Friday. Tomorrow I'm getting back into the training mood and I'm excited, it's crazy how training becomes part of you eh?. I'm scheduled to do a reverse brick, which I've never done, but I think should be cool. 30min moderate run, immediately followed by 1hr spinning class. Coach wants me to do this in order for me to become a better and stronger biker.... so anything that will improve my weakest leg, I'll try! Sunday I'm doing a recovery run and a swim.

Enjoy your weekend amigos!

PC
Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-23567463568663322202009-02-14T16:19:00.004-06:002009-02-14T16:39:51.753-06:00Valentine's boy......yup, that's me... kinda cheesy I know but I was born on this very day. On the other hand it's sorta cool because people remember :)

It's funny how you have a birthday and the first thing you think it's: "Oh shoot, I'm in a different age group now" In my case, one of (if not THE) hardest: 35 - 39 Oh well, I guess another reason to push myself even more.... right!

This morning I ran a local 5 miler race, the 'Ghisallo Frosty Five Run'. It was cold (low 30s, probably felt like in the 20s) and windy. According to my Garmin I finished at 35min 34sec... 6 seconds slower than last years. I didn't think about checking my previous year's time and try to beat it... typical me... oh well. Not that I have been working on speed at all, been focusing on my IM base-training right now, so I'm still happy with today's race.

After the race my lovely wife, a friend and I went to have breakfast. After that my friend left and wifey and I went to REI to get my b-day present, a bike rack. Ended up getting the THULE 594 Side Arm:

Cool eh?

I also grabbed some bike gloves and tights.

Training is still going great. Coach makes training fun, it's not repetitive or monotonous at all.
Gonna try to get out in the bike tomorrow, it'll be the first time outdoors since September!!!

Hope everyone is having an awesome Valentine's... enjoy!

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-3015415088389585242009-02-06T13:26:00.004-06:002009-02-06T13:48:06.924-06:00Base TrainingBeen working on my base training for about a month and it's been great!

The swims are pretty good and different workouts make them fun; trainer has been good as well... I find riding on the trainer a bit boring sometimes, but I've been doing mix workouts which make it better plus I watch movies while I ride... not sure I could do them with out a TV down there (basement). Running has been great, no complains there... especially since the weather is getting better. Tried my new Motion All-Weather Newtons and freaking love them, they feel awesome!

My great friend and now Coach Sam has agreed to help me with my training, she's basically training me and it's been working excellent! She has kicked my arse a couple of times but at the end of the day I feel good about each training session. She truly is a fantastic Coach, very knowledgeable and FUN. I am curious as to how my tris are going to go this season and of course how I'll do at IM Lou. (Thanks Sammy!! :) )

Racing-wise I'm doing a 5 mile race on Feb. 14 and then on Feb.28 I'm gonna do a 10 mile trail race. Next month I'm racing the St. Patrick's Day 5 mile race on Mar. 14. Some fun races until tri season which I can hardly wait for. My first tri (I think) will be Tri Zou (formerly known as Race for Sight) in Columbia, MO... It was hard to say good bye and leave them all but it was time.

Back now and started to train right away. It's been good and I feel great!

Started doing runs outside, yesterday it was really nice, in the 50s and sunny but this Sun is going to be in the 20s and I need to a get 60 min run in. Don't like running in the cold too much, even though it could be a lot colder so I might as well take advantage of the double 'still double digit'. Been on the bike/trainer... those can get boring but some people I know are going to do some group trainer work outs, that should be fun. Swimming is fine, no worries there.

Started working on good nutrition as well and I think that is going well.

Need to read the blogs I follow, I feel kinda disconnected with my blogger amigos.
Hope everybody is training hard and eating well.... like me... j/k.

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-30470870414505573632008-12-30T17:28:00.002-06:002008-12-30T17:38:15.082-06:00FELIZ AÑO NUEVO from Ecuador!Which means (for the ones who don't know): Happy New Year!
I am having a fabulous time in my home time Cuenca. :)

Been running a few times and man, it's a lot harder here (at about 9,000 feet sea-level). My nephew became my running partner. We did a litle 4.5 mile race and he kicked my arse....lol
He trains track and field and he has a lot of potential.
We're doing a 10K race tomorrow morning and I bet he'll place in his age group.

I just wanna take this opportunity to wish you all a fantastic 2009 and best luck training and racing!

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-49964508904564217002008-12-12T18:58:00.003-06:002008-12-12T19:10:15.093-06:00Quick updateTraining has been going real nice. Lifting has been good, spinning always is fun, picked up on running as well and I swam this week... it was the first time I went swimming since September (Cancun 70.3)!! Felt awesome though.

Can't believe I'm leaving to Ecuador a week from tomorrow... I can't hardly wait!

This weekend my wife and I are running a 5K race, it's called "Fun in the Freeway". They closed one of the highways here to fix it and before they re-open it (this Monday) they let them have a 5k race. Should be good times, and according to accuweather.com it'll be in high 40s.

Not a whole lot more to report at the moment.

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-29830521682287973742008-12-06T12:40:00.003-06:002008-12-06T13:16:00.716-06:00So I did it!I am officially registered for the Ford Ironman Louisville - Aug. 30, 2009!

I thought a lot about it... initially I was gonna shoot for IM Tempe, AZ but it got sold out in minutes, and the only IM event in the US still accepting applications was Louisville so it was either that one or wait until 2010. I registered a little over a week ago and yesterday I received one of those Ironman Top Stories email (newsletter) stating: "Ford Ironman Louisville Sells Out for 2009. Ironman announces that Ford Ironman Louisville, taking place on August 30, 2009, has reached capacity.", so I did it right on time.

This is very exciting and scary at the same time... it's hard to believe that in 2007 when I did my very first tri (sprint) I used to hear, read and watch all about Ironman and used to think: "yeah, it'll be a long long time until I start thinking about that". Several sprint, about 5 oly and 2 Half Ironman races I signed for Ironman.

So obviously I started training right away. Started going to the gym and doing some weights to get some strength back, started taking spinning and also started running.

Before registering for IM Lou I thought I'd do some training in Ecuador, you know a little running... maybe going to the gym I used to go when I lived there, nothing too serious. Now, with this race 8 months away I need to train hard and often. Haven't been doing much ever since the Chicago marathon on Oct/12. I've only ran ONCE and have done spinning at the gym 3 times I think. In one hand it's kind of nice to take a break, and not only from swim/bike/run but healthy food and not drinking break. On the other hand I am starting to miss it and I feel like my body is like: "uh... what's wrong??" Been wanting to get out and do something but I guess since I am not officially training for any race I don't have that urge/motivation or that pre-set schedule...

It's been busy though. Work has been not only busy but hectic busy and more than anything scary. Thanks to the economy right now just like many other companies we have been having layoffs. Not good. Even though so far I'm ok but nobody is safe. Hopefully things will get better... and over soon!

One of my sisters (I have two older sisters) came to visit from Ecuador for about 10 days. She came with her husband and little baby girl (almost 2 yrs old). They came during a fun time, elections - even though I was DONE with the campaign ads and all - and Halloween, which I love. It's so much fun. We did the typical touristic stuff, went out to eat, shopping, etc. We had a fantastic time.

I just finished watching an awesome movie I'd like to recommend. It's called "Into the Wild" directed by Sean Penn and based on a true story. It was excellent! Definitely on my 20 top list.

My next big, or HUGE event is next month. On Dec 20 the familia and I are going to CUENCA, Ecuador for almost a month. I can't wait. My whole family is down there. It's going to be so great to spend the holidays there with them. I hardly can't wait. This year is extra especial because, number one: since I came to the States (9 yrs ago) I have never been back for Christmas. I've been back, in fact we try to make it down there every year but we usually go in the summer or any other month. And secondly, and in fact more importantly because dad has been sick and I want to go see him and spend time with him. Of course I want to see mom and everybody else too :)

ART is great. I like it a lot. Have done 3 sessions so far and Heather - the Chiro - wants me to go once a week. To be honest I don't know if it is helping because it only hurts when I run long distances at race pace which of course I haven't done. But I really like the way it feels.

Ok my friends, for those who live in the Midwest and northern areas, stay warm. For the rest, I hate you guys! Just kidding! It was really cool to be around so many people. We started right on time 8am and off we went. Absolutely loved the crowds, they were cheering pretty much the whole 26.2 miles.

I was going at about 9min/mile pace, very comfortable, feeling great and by mile 12 the outside of my right knee started to hurt. "Oh please not again!!!" I had the same problem last year in Memphis when I ran my 1st marathon, it was at mile 17/18.. had to walk and run for a while (2 miles) until the Aleve I took kicked in and finished running it (slower but I was able to run it). Back in April this year it happened again when I ran the GO St. Louis Half Marathon at mile 9. I remember crossing the finish line limping and in so much pain.

Going back to Chicago. I had some pain killers which I took but I am not sure if they didn't work as well as they did in Memphis but the pain never went away, maybe a little bit but not enough to keep running. My split 13.1 was 2hrs 1min and from then on it all went down hill. I walked, stopped to strech and tried to run but it was too painful. I finished in 2hrs 43min (Last year in Memphis I finished at 4hrs 2min)

On top of that, for the first time ever I got a black toenail. It's my big right toenail. I'm pretty sure it will fall off... great! At least this happened at the end of the season. I had planned to run a couple of local 5Ks and maybe a 10K but it all depends on the freaking nail. LOL

This past Friday I went to see a Chiropractor who does ART (Active Release Techniques). She adjusted my back and I am going back on Monday for my knees issues... I hear ART is a bit painful but very effective. I am willing to try it. Last year I did PT and I think it helped some but obviously it did not get fixed...

Hope everyone is enjoying the fall and getting ready for: (evil voice) H A L L O W E E N!!!

PC

Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-11983688947771667872008-10-02T20:53:00.001-05:002008-10-02T20:53:45.059-05:00IRONMAN 70.3 Cancun, Mexico pics - Sept 21, 2008

Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-62142323796556213692008-10-01T19:06:00.003-05:002008-10-03T16:34:15.682-05:00Back from Mex & CUN 70.3 RRCan't believe I'm back... Mexico was so cool. Came back this past Sunday night and Mon had to go back to work... don't you hate that?

So we left STL on Fri the 19th, arrived in Cancun at around 3pm, there were quite a few other athletes arriving with their bike boxes, wheel bags and that. Then we went to the hotel (Fiesta Americana - the race host hotel). As soon as we got out of the airport we felt it... toasty weather!

Checked-in, got to the room, changed and after while the familia went to the pool to chill and I went to check out the Expo. Got my goodie bag and joined the fam at the pool. Later we had dinner, went back to the room and I put the bike together. Sat woke up at 7am, grabbed a shuttle bus the hotel/race had available for the racers that took us to the swim practice. Swam for about 25min and went back. Had breakfast and went for a ride to make sure the bike was ok, especially since tat was the first time I put the whole thing together by myself (wheels, handle bar, pedals, seat and derailleur). Bike felt great, went back, went to the pool for a while, ate, went to the race update meeting, took the bike to race site to leave it in TA, came back, ate and went to bed.

Woke up at 4:15am, got changed and left. Got to race site, set up TA and waited. We started right on time. My wave was at 7:07am. We started right on time. Saw the pros go first (Chris Legh , Oscar Galindez, LukeMcKenzie, Pip Taylor, Michellie Jones, etc)

1.2 mile swim: 37min 29sec 51:35/100meters - The swim went fine, started a little too conservative I think, but since it was my first time racing in the ocean I just wanted to take my time. It was crowded and rough too. Weather-wise great!

T1: s..l..o..w... 6min 22sec it was a long 300 - 350 meter run from the beach to TA plus, I had to stop to pee... hee hee. Oh well!

56 mile bike: 2hrs 52min 49sec 19.2mph avg - The bike went really good. Totally flat, a bit windy at times but in general really good. Agua, Perpetuem and Hammer gel worked great. This time I added 1 salt pill (Endurolytes) each hour and Nuun caps to the water. No problems there, all good! Weather-wise it felt pretty good... it even rained for a bit, nice breeze too.

T2: 2min 39sec BAU

(here comes the 'fun' part)
13.1 mile run: 2hrs 10min 17sec - The run simply SUCKED. Started pretty ok but by mile 5 the sun came out, and OMG I could feel it and badly. It was unbelievably hot and humid. I had to walk a ton. Later I learned it was in the 100s (around 112 and 100% humidity) ouch... very ouch! I walked during several water stations, and they had them every km (0.62 miles) and it almost felt not enough! But it was, it was just crazy, nasty and stupid hot. The volunteers were really nice. They had small bags of agua which you'd grab, bit a corner and drink it and/our pour it all over. They also had ice cubes, Gatorade, Power gels, oranges, bananas and Coke.

Crossed the line at 5hrs 51min 16sec. It was such a great feeling finishing and seeing the familia cheering... Finally I did a 70.3 (Kansas doesn't count!)
They had food, drinks, cold towels, the medal and finisher t-shirts. There was also a medical tent packed with athletes laying with a horrible and painful look in their faces with IVs hooked in their arms... thank God I wasn't one of them.

Had a couple of Gatorades and went to hang out with the fam. Later I went to get my stuff and we went back to the hotel to celebrate the mexican way... TEQUILA BABY! :) Ate a ton and drank some too..... that night I slept like a baby... like a drunk baby... lol

In other news... I am doing my last tri (sprint: 500yS/21MB/5MR) of the season this Sunday and sadly, like Sam, a fellow blogger said for us Midwesterners tri season is over now.
And on 10/11 I'm travelling to Chicago to run the Bank of America Marathon (formerly known as La Salle Marathon)

Andrea - I promise I am posting at least 5 pics soon! :)

EL FIN!

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-45561317668249464752008-09-14T10:28:00.002-05:002008-09-14T11:15:58.984-05:006 more days... ...until Ironman 70.3 Cancun. My -almost- last tri of the season. I say almost because I MIGHT do one more, the St. Peters Rec-Plex Fall Tri on Oct 5th. It's a sprint one: 500yS/21MB/5MR. I did it last year and it's a nice way to end the season. But we'll see, kind of undecided yet.

I see some of the bloggers I read have been working on their 2009 race schedule, which makes me think I should as well, even though I have been thinking about 1 or 2 here and there. I will come up with a list soon.

I also see some bloggers write less and less....(including me) as the tri season ends I can tell triathletes are fading out. On one hand I feel I need a break, months and months of training feel heavy and our bodies are asking for some rest, some bad food and some beer :)

I miss waking up in the morning, looking outside and see daylight, you know?

On the other hand I know after a couple of weeks I will be missing the tri season big time.

My plan right now is to focus on Cancun, have a good race, enjoy it and have fun. We're staying in Mexico for about a week after the race... BUT... things are not over yet for me. I still have the Chicago Marathon... and it's only 3 weeks after 70.3! Wait, before you say how crazy (or dumb) this guy is for registering for these 2 races, let me explain how this happened. Last year, after my first full marathon (December 08 - Memphis, TN) I decided to do one marathon a year, so after Chicago opened registration I went ahead and registered. A few months later, the familia and I were looking to do a vacation, we wanted to go to some beach. Initially we thought FL, looked for prices, they were kind of high so I decided to check Mexico thinking 'what if'... well... I was right. I ended up finding cheaper flights. So in the process of buying the tix it hit me.

PC's brain: "Dude, there's a 70.3 in Cancun!!!" Checked with the wife and the cool, supportive and understanding wife she is, she said: "do it, might as well!" YES!!!!!!

Wait.... the tri is 3 weeks after Chicago... D'oh! But I thought, I could do Chicago any other year (I'm about 5 hrs drive away) and I don't know when I would be able to go to Cancun again, so I registered. And after months of training and some of those months I have been working with Coach, we (Coach and I) decided I still should and could do Chicago even though my priority is Cancun. Obviously I won't be PR'ing in Chicago, still it'll be great to run with so many people.

I've checking the weather for Cancun and man oh man, it's gonna be H O T !

For race day Sun Sept 21 it says: "Very humid with periods of clouds and sunshine. High 88 - Heat index: 105" Wow... it's gonna be interesting.

Good luck to all of you racing next weekend!

PC
Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-83862969937788387012008-09-02T19:52:00.005-05:002008-09-03T20:19:06.872-05:00Lake Saint Louis Oly triathlon race report and more...This past weekend (Saturday) I raced LSL (Lake St. Louis) Oly tri.... and allow me to say it went GREAT.. better than expected.... this was supposed to be a B race but I ended up PR'ing :)

Fantastic weather.... in the low 70s.... excellent day for a tri - even though later in the day it got hot.... and humid.

The swim - 0.9 miles
Started feeling a bit tired.... I've been thinking about maybe all the 2008 (and part of 07) training has been building up and I was starting to get tired... and I realized it was more mental than physical. My last swim I felt tired.. heavy arms.. etc... I remember telling one of my friend's right before we started: "I feel like I'm not ready for this tri"
The siren went off and we started.... felt really good and very relaxed.... after probably the first 300 meters I found this guy and I drafted him.. almost the whole swim... AGAIN! I did the exact same thing the previous weekend at the Chicago Oly tri. Felt strong and towards the end I passed that guy and finished hard.
- Swim time: 26min 06sec Swim pace: 1:48/100m (2nd fastest swim in my AG)

T1 time: 1min 52sec

The bike - 24.8 miles
The bike went great. Felt awesome so I decided to hammer it.
Everything worked out perfect... this time the bike shoes on the pedals were fine.
- Bike time: 1hr 11min 38sec Avg MPH: 20.8! My fastest evah!! :)

T2 time: 1min 2sec

The run - 6.2 miles
I was a bit more tired than usual after the bike because I went faster than usual but I thought what the heck.... I grabbed water at each water station and kept going. Close to the finish line I heard all the people, a few people I knew started cheering and I sprinted to the finish line, which was up hill - ouch!
Run time: 47min 24sec Run pace: 7:38min/mile

Hats off to the organizers and race director, who I actually know. He did an amazing job. This year's race was even better than last's.

Total time: 2hrs 28min 2sec (My last year's time was 2hrs 44min)

AG: 7/34 - OA: 63/327

In other news... Today Coach had me doing an 1hr 15min run in HR zone 1!!!! The whole 1hr 15min! It was cra-zy! Never done it before.... she's so funny, she said: "Embarrassingly slow"
I came home after work got ready and started to pour... bad! Lightning and all. Decided to go to the gym and do it on a treadmill.... the first 30min I was at 15min/mile! LOL and my HR zone was still reaching zone 2, so I had to SLOW DOWN.... it was actually kind of funny. I did it, done.. finished... no mas!!!

(with announcer's voice): Aaaaaaaaand now.. iiiiiiiiit's time to think about IM 70.3!
18 days and counting!

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-79470266941349884672008-08-26T20:30:00.003-05:002008-08-27T21:09:05.864-05:00Back in STL The Chicago race was pretty cool.

Left St. Louis on Fri afternoon - a lot later than expected - and arrived in Chicago after midnight. Went to our friend's place and straight to bed.. exhausted!

Sat am headed to the Expo at the Hilton in downtown Chicago. Awesome Expo, loved it, lots of cool stuff.

Gave my race number, got my bib, got the chip, confirmed it, got my goodie bag and swimming cap. Got body marked. They wrote my wave number on my calf: 46, and the lady told me to go check my wave time on a chart... my start time was 9:21AM! D'oh! Bummer... because they opened TA from 4:15AM until 5:45AM, meaning every single athlete needed to be there in between that time and then out of there.

Sun morning was nice, in the low 70s and no humidity, and it stayed like that pretty much the whole day.

I got there just a bit before 5AM, got all my stuff ready in the biggest transition area I have ever seen.... sadly I don't have any pics of it, I didn't have my cam with me... Walked around, saw the sprinters start... walked some more... laid down on the grass, took a 15 min nap.... I tell ya.. it sucked! Got ready got on line with my group.

We started right on time, and for the first time I drafted in the swim.... the whole swim! It was awesome! I left my shoes (on the pedals) but... with the velcro on! So after a few min I was pedaling I reached to get my feet in the shoes and I realized the velcro was on.... I of tried to opened them up but couldn't.. HAD TO STOP!! I was so mad... quite frustrating. Stopped, got off the bike, took the shoes off the pedals with my hands, got the shoes on, clipped them and took off again. Surprisingly enough I had a great ride, in fact my best race ride ever. I ended up with an average of 20.1 MPH, really fast for me considering the bike is my weakest leg. The bike course was pretty flat though, and bumpy too.

- 40Km (24.8 miles) Bike time: 1hr 13min 44sec

Got back to TA, got my running shoes, bib and visor and I was gone.

- T2 time: 2min 35sec

Needless to say my legs were tired for the run and I could tell... Can't believe it's already here.. can't believe we are almost done with August!!

This race should be fun and interesting. I read there are over 8,500 athletes registered and probably about 6,500 or so will race. I've been wondering how TA is going to look... it's gonna be massive! I understand the Expo is huge as well and they have a ton of cool stuff... it's gonna be hard not to spend a lot of $$.

Even though it's an Oly distance race they have this feature called: "Accenture Triathlon Alert System" where you registered for free, provide a cell number and/or an email address and a message it's sent each time the registered athlete passes a mat to the cell or email you gave. I just registered so my familia knows where and when to look for me. It's a useful tool since there will be so many people racing.

The weather here in St. Louis has been rainy with temps of 70s - 80s... which is not bad... I would be happier with out the rain though. AccuWeather says this Sun will be in the 80s and no rain in Chicago, I hope it stays that way.

Good luck to the all athletes who are racing this weekend as well and if you are not racing, have fun training! :)

PC
Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-33397882269148659862008-08-14T09:19:00.003-05:002008-08-15T07:39:10.931-05:00MiscellaneousCan't believe it's mid August already... 4 more months and 2008 is over! And after that I move to the 35 - 39 age group LOL.... funny how we think about our age like that now.

Aug 24 I have the 'accenture Chicago triatlhon'. And next month my second 70.3 in Cancun, Mexico... can't wait!

Training has been great. Last weekend I had an awesome work out. Sat I did the Ghisallo Scorcher 4 mile race. For the first time ever I felt pukey before the finish... the last .5 mile or so... weird. Time: 27min 34 sec.

Sun met with Coach and some people she knew to do a brick. It was 7 of us, we rode 80 miles and then we ran 2 miles. It was the perfect day for it.
I bought a new saddle for Diabla and tried it on Sun, loved it. It's the Blackwell ISM Adamo Racing/Tri Saddle, very cool!

I haven't been able to swim ever since my tri at Innsbrook (Aug 2). The following Tue after that race I had a mole taken out of my back and got 3 stitches. The doc told me to not swim for at least a week. This past was a week and today I'm going back to the pool for a 1,700 meter swim.
The mole results came back negative, it was just a normal mole.... The stitches need to come off next Tue.

Weather has been excellent. Low to mid 80s and very low % of humidity... Even though I was supposed to be training in the super hot and humid Midwest August weather in preparation for Ironman Cancun 70.3, oh well.

PCPatriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5810543117379198510.post-38231270538848081752008-08-05T20:26:00.004-05:002008-08-05T21:19:32.254-05:00Who Tri's Harder Quartermax - Priority BI had a pretty good race last Saturday at the "Who Tri's Harder Quartermax" tri. Considering I almost didn't do it. Last Wed I was in bed at 7pm with a fever! Thu felt a bit better and had to go to work since I had some mandatory training I couldn't miss... I was considering not doing the tri by then. Fri I took off work and tried to rest as much as I can and ended up going to Innsbrook, MO (about 50 - 60 mile drive west from St. Louis)

Sat morning I got there at 6:30ish and did the BAU stuff.... set up TA, got body marked, got chip, etc.

Saw and talked to some STL Tri Club peeps and then got with a couple of friends and waited until a pre-race meeting they called right at the lake beach. The race director provided the last updates and we had a minute of silence for the guy who died last year during this triathlon. He had a heart attack during the swim and drawn. It was pretty weird to think it was only a year ago and we were about to get in the same lake....

The Octomaxers went first... guys wave, then ladies wave. Then it was our turn, Quartermaxers.... ladies and then guys, plus relay teams. Great mass start practice. Got kicked and pushed a bit but nothing major. Started pretty relaxed.. stretching and focusing on staying straight towards the buoys. Half way I felt really good so I decided to go a bit faster. Out of the lake and run up hill to TA. It was a long jog.... Grabbed bike and all and took off.... the ride went fine with no issues. Came back, and took off for the hilly run... I could feel the sun by then as well.... and the worst part was the horse flies..... they were everywhere and were chasing me!! Got bitten 5 - 8 times... bastards! - I know what you meant Sam when you ran at WyCo -

1000 yard swim: 16min 31sec - 1:39min/100y

T1: 1:39

28 mile bike: 1hr 21min 20sec - 19.9mph avg

T2: 1:29

6.5 mile run: 48min 42 sec - min/mile: 8:07

Total time: 2hrs 29min 43sec

AG: 7/25 - OA: 60/238

Had a great time and enjoyed it a ton!

Last week I sold my Fuji bike to this guy from work.... I liked my Fuji and it was the bike I start doing tris with but I was never fitted to it, so it was big for me. It was time to let go... I needed a different bike anyway to take the familia for rides (My wife and I pull the kiddos in our bikes). The Fuji's gone and yesterday I bought a hybrid: The Trek 7000

Here's a pic of me and my new addition: "Lola" :)

Patriciohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13722662534610423733noreply@blogger.com4
