Training

Two more days and adios February.... wow, time is sure flying. Spring is just around the corner...finally! that means time to run and ride and do any outdoor activity (at least with out freezing your butt off)

Training has been going pretty good. Last weekend I ran 11.20 miles on Sunday on a not very nice and/or even terrain. There was snow and it was melting, so it was splashy, wet and cold. I went out shooting for a 15 miler but I just couldn't take it anymore and went back home. Still 11 was good.

Monday had spinning at night and then swam 2,100 meters... nice work out. Yesterday I did weight training: triceps and chest. It's interesting how your body works. Before I used to lift 4 - 5 times a week, now I am down to 1 - 2 times every other week! Definitely had to go down on weight.. which is fine, because at this point I'm not really focusing on building muscle but endurance.

Today I took off. I just got back from our St. Louis Triathlon Club monthly meeting. This is my first year as a member. The meetings are pretty cool.... you meet a lot of other triathletes, from beginner to elite guys. The Club people bring water, food and snacks and we talk about up coming races, training sessions and they usually have a guest speaker. Today, there was a coach from Training Bible (which is one of the Club's sponsors) who gave information about their services and up coming events and clinics. Interesting stuff.

Tomorrow I'm planning to do a 5 miler run at lunch and spinning class at night. Friday a 6.2 run again at lunch and probably a 2,000 meter swim at night. The plan for the weekend is Sat 15 mile run and Sun bike ride!! If weather.com is right (crossing fingers) this weekend is going to be nice, Sat high of 50 and Sun high of 59! So, time to get the bike and go out. Can't wait!

Cheers,

The Tagging Game...

I got tagged by 2 of the bloggers I enjoy:
Tracie http://traciestriadventures.blogspot.com/
And, Monica http://trainingtotri.blogspot.com/
Thanks? :Þ

So for the ones who don't know when you get tagged you are suppose to write 7 weird/random things about you and share with other bloggers. Let's see...

1.- A lot of times people spell my name PatrciA or even worse, on the phone and after they hear my voice they go: hello PatriciA.... I swear I have a masculine voice! (by the way it's pronounced like: pah-tree-syo

2.- Speaking of my name... Patrick in English. Patricio is a Roman (Patricius) name and it means "nobleman" in Latin.

3.- In 1993 I met Brazilian: Pelé (Edson Arantes Do Nascimento), the greatest soccer in the history of history.

4.- I have obvserved an autopsy.

5.- In 91 I was in a bad car accident and broke two lower back/lumbar vertebrae (the wings of them aka: transverse process)

6.- My grandfather’s grandfather was the president of Ecuador (South America)

7.- You ready for this one?? I have eaten guinea-pig. Yup, you heard it, or read it well.. guinea-pig. In Ecuador they are called 'cuy' and they are certainly not a pet. In fact they are raised in farms just as cows, pigs and chickens. What does cuy taste like? it's very good actually. If you have ever tried rabbit let me tell you guinea-pig is kind of similar but better. You're probably thinking, THAT is a weird fact..... I see it more as a cultural difference, I mean some people here eat squirrels?? hmmm...

The lucky ones I am tagging are:

- Ellie http://runningandserendipity.blogspot.com/
- Runnergirl http://13point1milejourney.blogspot.com/
- Sarah http://pbj.typepad.com/
- Donald: http://www.runningandrambling.com/
- Sara: http://tri-nyc.blogspot.com/
- Dave: http://tri4freedom.blogspot.com/
- Carrie: http://tritobefunny.blogspot.com/

The rules of the game:

# Link to the person who tagged you.
# Post the rules on your blog.
# Share seven random and/or weird facts about yourself on your blog.
# Tag seven random people at the end of your post, and include links to their blogs.
# Leave a comment on their blogs so that they know they have been tagged.

Thanks and enjoy!!

Better weather this weekend?

The winter storm was pretty bad. A lot of people worked from home (including myself) on Thursday... The roads were bad, I watched on the news and heard on the radio there were a lot of accidents. It's crazy how people go wild with the snow here... I mean, we get snow every year, people should know hot to drive in it... it's not like it only snows once every 2 - 3 years!

Thursday night I was supposed to go see "Spirit of the Marathon" and unfortunately that never happened. I can't believe this was the second time they were showing it and I missed.... bummer! I wish they will show it like any other movie so I could go see it whenever. I wonder when the DVD is coming out. I went to the gym instead and did 1 hour spinning class.

Yesterday it snowed in the morning until almost lunch time. It was also my rest day. After work Rachael (my wife) and I went to Fleet Feet to get her running shoes. The winner: Mizuno Wave Creation 9. They are pretty cool looking and she loved the way they felt. She also tried the Asics Cumulus 9 (which are the ones I wear and love) and the Saucony, I think they were the Trigon 5s... not so sure to be honest.

This morning we went to the gym and she tried them on the treadmill and apparently they worked. Even though she still had some shin-splint pain, it was less. I think the rest and of course the new shoes helped. We'll see how it goes.
I took the 1 hour spinning class. Carrie, the teacher: rocks! I personally think she is the best out of the 4 instructors... or are there 5? either way, love taking Carrie's class.

This afternoon I'm going to a bike store to get cleats for my bike shoes. I bought a pair of tri bike shoes a couple of months ago and haven't wore them yet, needed the cleats. I have another pair so it wasn't that I needed them right away but I do want to try the new shoes. Hopefully I'll have them ready for Monday for the next spinning class.

The weather is getting better this weekend. It's 37 right now and the sun is out, the snow is melting away and I hope most of it is gone by tomorrow morning when I'm suppose to do a 12 - 15 miler.

That's all folks!

Shin-splints are taking ova!

Yesterday I ran my typical 6.2 at lunch. I wore the Zensah sleeves (I got at Fleet Feet) for my shin-splints and wow!... they sure work! It's nice to get out and run but the weather is getting bad again.... in fact we have a winter storm watch until Friday.
Last night I also went to the gym and swam 2,100 meters. Did 1,000 and rested, then another 1,000 and rested again and finished with a 100 mts cool down.

Today went to the gym after work, did spinning for 1 hr and weight training afterwards. It's cold and I hear the strong winds outside... hope it doesn't get extremely bad and affect the roads too much. Obviously there will be no running outside, maybe treadmill?.. more like DREADmill... hate it!

Actually, tomorrow I'm going to see "Spirit of the Marathon", I've heard really good things about it. Plus it is suppose to be about the Chicago Marathon which I registered for Oct 08, so I'm looking forward to it.

Today I ended up registering for the Lake Saint Louis Triathlon (Olympic dist). I couldn't decide if I should do it or not since the weekend before (Aug 24) I will be doing the Accenture Chicago Tri (Olympic dist)... but I did, so we'll see how that goes.

Ok, so are shin-splints contagious? I've been having them for a while and my wife who started running a couple of months ago and now is training for her first 5K started having them too! craziness! No, I know shin-splints are not contagious but c'mon! She was totally into training, all motivated and now she's a bit upset.... you know how it is when you're training and suddenly from nowhere a pain comes and bugs the crap out of ya. She was going to run a 3 miler tonight and after the 1st mile she had to stop because of the pain. I think it's her shoes. She's been wearing a pair of Nike Shox, to be honest I don't even know the model... in the insole it says "Women's Running". I personally don't think shox are good for running, I think the foot is inclined, doesn’t look comfortable... but what do I know!? Well... needless to say, tomorrow or Friday we are heading to Fleet Feet so she can get the right running shoe. In the meantime I told her to take off tomorrow and maybe Fri too, depending on how she feels.

Ok blogger friends... EL FIN

No tri bike :(

Hope I am not getting sick but I am not feeling the best... Yesterday I was supposed to go for my long run and didn't. It was supposed to snow and rain and I used that as an excuse, it was a good one but there was no snow or rain, in fact the sun was out for a bit. My friend BT and I were going to meet and run and I cancelled.... he still went and told me later he did get some rain and he said it was really windy, I guess I didn't miss much!

I went to the gym instead and swam 2,100 meters. Afterwards the familia and I went to the Olmedos, our good friends from Ecuador. They made this really yummy lunch and had cake and ice cream for my birthday (it was on 02/14). On top of all the great food they gave me a nice card with an REI gift card, they're the best!

My plan B was running this morning since I am off (President's Day) but yeah, I didn't go again... I don't know if I'm getting sick or I'm unmotivated, either way it sucks!
I will be heading to the gym this afternoon to do some weight training and spinning class.

I think I'm upset because I am not getting a tri bike which I have been almost dreaming about for a few months. I finally convinced the wife and was going to get a tri bike in Feb or March but some unexpected expenses came up and no bike.... I know it's silly but I was all excited and looking forward to it, especially to ride it in my first half Ironman in June...

Good race

Well, yesterday I ended up not going to the gym, I was way too tired, got home, ate something and laid in bed. I think I was already sleeping at 9:30ish... I think my body needed the rest because this morning I felt great when I woke up, got ready to go to University City (for my 5 mile race), which is about 35 min drive east from my house.

Got there at about 7, parked and walked to Ghisallo Running store, Ghisallo organized the race and opened a new store in U City. Got my bib (204) and my t-shirt and walked back to my car to get ready. The temp was in the 20s and I wasn't sure if I should race wearing either shorts or pants... went with the shorts. Had also a dri-fit t-shirt, a dri-fit long sleeve t-shirt and a running light jacket. Course I also had gloves and a hat. Went back to Ghisallo and met my friend Amy and her boyfriend Brett. My friend Shawn was also there.

At 7:50AM we all went outside and got ready to start. They gave us the last instructions and off we went. There were probably about 40 - 50 of us. The organizers did a great job with the race. There were cops everywhere making sure the race went smooth and a few volunteers were helping out directing people and holding signs for the drivers to watch the runners.

I crossed the finished line at 35 min 28 sec (according to my GPS). Had some water and waited for my friends. Later we all went back to Ghisallo store since they had attendance prizes... they had a ton of stuff, so many that when they started calling numbers, a lot of people already left and it was taking forever. So they decided to start throwing gloves, t-shirts and bags. Then they proceeded with the award ceremony and after that they picked two more numbers and gave 2 pair of Mizuno shoes away! I didn't get the shoes but I got a pair of gloves and bag, not bad!

Overall the race was really well organized and I had an awesome time. Afterwards went to have breakfast with my friends and came back home....

Got to run now... the familia is waiting for me to go to the mall.

TGIF!!!

And...this is a long weekend... at least for me. Monday, Presidents Day I am off, yes!

Only bad thing is I don't feel the greatest. I think my body is fighting the flu or somehting, I sure hope not. The whole day I have been kinda of down, no energy and a bit weak even. I am supposed to swim tonight and maybe lift but I don't know if it's happening.

Tomorrow I have a 5 mile race and I'm thinking maybe I should rest some and be ok for it. We'll see how the rest of the afternoon and evening go.

Had a pretty good lunch with the wife, we went to a sushi place. Since Fleet Feet is close to the restaurant we stopped by to redeem my $25 I received after spending $250. Ended up getting this compression sleeves that'll hopefully help me with the shin-splints I've been getting. Shin-splints are the worst man, they come and go and more than anything they bother me. When I run I feel them but they don't hurt enough to stop, they are simply uncomfortable, plus I keep thinking about it: When is the pain gonna go away? / I hate shin-splints! / I wonder why I have them... etc, etc.

I am debating if I should sign for a local olympic tri. Thing is I am registered for an olympic tri on Aug 23 in Chicago. The Lake Saint Louis Triathlon (LSL Tri) is taking place just a week later on Aug 30. I did the LSL tri last year (my first oly tri) and had a GREAT time, plus I really like to support the local races. It's a popular one and gets sold out fast, need to decide soon. Would I be too tired? I could always take it easy and go at a slower pace? well... maybe I can take a break for once... a break? what's that?!?!? hmmm... On the other hand I would like to compare my last year's time.... dang it!

Ok... 4:31pm.... going to get ready to go home, and maybe the gym? we shall see.
Later!

Happy Valentine's day!

Yesterday was sort of an unexpected rest day for me. The little one was sick so me and my wife divided the day to stay home. Had to run errands, ended up not having time to go to the gym. There goes my day off for the week.

Today we had a very decent running weather day, well kind of... it was in the 40s and sunny. Went for a 6.2 miler with my friend and felt great. The wind was a bit strong a couple of times but not big deal, we enjoyed it.

After the run my friend invited me to lunch, we went to one of our fav places: Pantera's Pizzeria. Apparently this restaurant has been around for a while. A few years ago there were some of them in the Missouri and Illinois area and now there is only a couple left. It's a simple small 'hole in the wall' type place. Ate lots of pizza and chicken wings, great combo huh? oh, and perfect recovery meal too...LOL I was so full all afternoon and part of the evening. The instructor at spinning kicked our butts and I made an extra effort to sweat Pantera's out.

But anyway great work out today, like I said I ran 6.2 at lunch then had 1 hr spinning class and finished it with a 1,000 meters slow swim.
Not sure what I'll be doing tomorrow, maybe some weight training and consider it as an active rest day. Got a 5 mile race on Saturday and a long run on Sunday, I sure hope we get ok weather.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Starting today I have one year left in the 30 - 34 age group... yup, it's my b-day :) Funny how you related your b-day with the sport.

Hope everybody has a wonderful Valentine’s! (don't eat too much candy and chocolate :) )

The flu is everywhere!!

Wow... what a season eh? Everybody is sick.... I mean everybody! A couple of days ago I was at Walgreen in line for 35 min to get some meds!
People at work call in sick or take a family sick days.... wherever you go you hear people coughing, or sneezing or they sound all stuffy! Take lots of vitamin C.

It's about 9:30PM (central) and the weather channel says it's 17 but it feels like 5... so yeah, those who are sick will probably get worse and the ones who are not sick...yet, will most likely get sick. Man, I don't know about you but I am ready for some spring weather. Crazy thing is, on Thursday the temp is going to go all the way up to the 50s... so it goes up and down in a matter of hours.... the result: lining up at Walgreens for 30ish min.
I feel my body has been fighting it bad. Hopefully I won't get it.

Today it was 1 hour of spinning class and right after it I got on the treadmill (yuck!) and ran 2 miles. - As you can see, I HATE the treadmill.... it usually hurts my lower legs and especially my shins.... the good ol' shin-splints. -

Going to go for now. Will check what's on my tivo for a few min and then hasta mañana...

New Job

Happy Monday!

So I got a new job.... same company, different position. I'm pretty excited about it. Been in my current job for about 5 - 6 yrs, so I needed a change, was ready for a new challenge. Starting a week from today I'll have a new job, yeah!!

Today after work I went to the gym and did spinning class for an hour and after that I swam 2,000 meters (1.2 miles) non-stop, which felt great. For my Ironman 70.3 race in June the swim leg is 1,900 meters swim. My goal is to do it in 30 min or less if I can.... Today I swam the 2K in 37 min 11 sec. I think I might be able to pull 30 on race day... hopefully.

Went home and saw my wife and the girls going to the gym, she is actually training for her first 5K race on March 31. I'll run with her and the girls, I got a double jogging stroller and take the girls every once in a while, they love when we go for runs. I've only raced once with them and we had a blast. The race had a stroller division and we took 2nd place. :)

Anyway, came home made dinner waited for the familia and ate a ton... my bed is calling me.

Another cold day

The whole day has been in the teens and windy.

Today was a rest day for me training-wise. I usually take off on Fridays but this past week was crazy, I ended up running on Fri and yesterday too so I decided to take off today.

The familia and I went to Illinois to visit my wife's great-aunt, today was her birthday. We had a nice lunch in a restaurant at Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton, Illinois.

It's a real nice drive from O'Fallon, Missouri (where I live) to Grafton, Il; especially after you cross the Mississippi river, after that it's about a 15 mile ride on the river road. During this time of the year bald eagles come to the area, we saw two of them, one sitting on a tree and the other one flying.... such cool birds they are! Sometime I'd like to take my bike there and ride next to the mighty Mississippi.

Anyway... nothing else to report for now. Need to get things ready for tomorrow.
Cheers!

My 1st blog.

So here I am... sitting in front my computer on a surprisingly warm afternoon in the Midwest. It's sunny and about 51 degrees... not bad for February. For a while I have been contemplating becoming a 'blogger'. I've heard a lot about this and in fact I read a few blogs here and there, but I always thought: "I'm not a writer.. in fact I suck at writing" but at the same time I've kind of been wanting to do it. Funny thing is, it happened by accident, I mean I was in google/picasa downloading some pictures, and on the top of the page it said: Blog.... and here's me: hmmm... I'll click on it. The rest is history.

Wasn't sure about the name, and if you are wondering what the heck 'cuencano' means... fear no more: Cuencano is a person from the beautiful city of Cuenca; the third most important and largest city in Ecuador, down in South America. - A very brief geography lesson for you... The tiny country of Ecuador (size of Colorado) is between Colombia and Peru and it's on the Pacific Coast. And Cuenca, my hometown is in the south of the country right where the Andes go through, in fact it is about 9,000 feet above sea-level.

Ok, enough about that..... So, yes... this is my very first blog ever. To be honest I am not sure if I will keep writing more, how often or about what, but we'll see.

About me.... I am a 33 year old Ecuadorian who's been living in the States for over 8 yrs. Married to a wonderful and beautiful wife and together we have 2 gorgeous little princesses.I work in the credit card industry. And my interests are working out and running.... and since last spring/summer my newest interest is triathlons.... I absolutely LOVE doing them, in fact I think triathlons, or tris (you need to learn the triathlete lingo, right?) are now my very favorite thing to do. I did 5 sprint* (short distance) tris and 1 olympic** one last year and currently I'm training for my first Half Ironman which will take place in June 15 in Lawrence, Kansas.

As part of the training I mentioned above today my friend Karey and I ran 15 miles on the Katy Trail (actually Karey stayed to run 3 more miles)

*Sprint tri is usually 500 - 750mts (about a mile) swim, 20km (12 miles) bike and 5km (3.1 miles) run
** Olympic tri (also known as oly) is always 1.5km (0.9 mile) swim, 40km (24.8 mile) bike and 10km (6.2 miles) run

With this I will log off for now.
Adios!

P
